March Against Monsanto's Facebook page has shared a cartoon that I have seen going around for a couple of weeks and it has some inaccuracies in it that bother me. So, I decided to fix it up for them. You're welcome.

Absolutely FREE!!!

Are you
stressed by "science" debunking your homeopathy? If you are like many people who
are juggling several things at once – work, endangering your kids, cooking up conspiracies, or researching
on Natural News – even the best google research skills and organic-gluten-free-vegan-fair-trade-sustainably-souced chai tea, is
sometimes not enough to keep your energy up by the end of a long day of gish
galloping around Facebook. It’s a shame because as your day winds down, there
should be time for quiet reflection and loving moments with your family. But
all you can do is fall asleep exhaustedly dreaming of one day winning a
scientific debate with that one word: sheeple.
The
reason you feel so bogged down is you assume; you assume correlation equals causation, you assume your many roles in this day and age (scientific
researcher, pediatrician, immunologist, autism specialist, name caller and
general know-it-all). As people who juggle many assumptions and roles, we set high expectations
of ourselves and expect everyone else to live up to our illogical demands. And
before you know it – you feel, and everyone around you feels, physically and emotionally drained. How do you
create balance in your life when "scientists" with their superior attitudes and peer reviewed research simply won’t let you?
If you
are looking to:

Raw Milk as Baby Formula? Have You Lost Your F#@%ing Mind??
I'm not a doctor, nurse or an expert in nutrition and I won't pretend I know everything. I do know a few things in life though. I learned the hard way that selling raw milk is illegal for a very good reason. According to the CDC:
"Before the invention and acceptance of pasteurization, raw milk was a common source of the bacteria that cause tuberculosis, diphtheria, severe streptococcal infections, typhoid fever, and other foodborne illnesses. These illnesses killed many people each year, especially young children."
In 2007 my husband, who was raised on a dairy farm, started
working for an award winning dairy in Monticello, WI. One of the perks of the
job for him was access to fresh, raw milk again. I had never drank raw milk,
being a "city" (OK, small town) girl all my milk came in plastic jugs
from the store, safely pasteurized long before it got to me. My husband, on the
other hand, was raised on raw milk and most likely developed an immunity due to some exposure early in his life.
I thought the worst thing that would happen from
drinking raw milk was I might get something like food poisoning. While
miserable and you may feel either like you are dying or wish you were, some
vomiting or diarrhea isn't usually dangerous. I wouldn't want to get it, but I
thought there was nothing too much to worry about. Boy was I wrong!
A month or so after leaving that farm I had to have TB clearance
and got the skin test. It was no big deal, I had undergone the test several
times in the past. You get a poke with a needle that injects a little liquid, a tuberculin, just under your skin on your forearm. Around 2-3 days later a nurse
reads your body's reaction to the tuberculin. I had always checked out fine,
before. When I went back for the reading this time, I was caught completely off guard by
the nurse's reaction. Positive. I had tested positive for tuberculosis!
The very first thing the county nurse did was hand me a box of face masks and told to put one on any time I developed a cough. (I had to wear one the first week, until the chest x-ray was completed.) I was immediately started on a drug called Isoniazid (INH), which was dispensed to me by the public health nurse rather than a pharmacy. It was provided to me free of charge. INH is no picnic, it can be a dangerous drug. I had to have blood tests quite often, to check my liver function, and had to take vitamin B6 with it to prevent neurological issues of "numbness and tingling". I had to give up eating several foods while on INH, to avoid possible complications.
I couldn't understand how I could have TB, but not have TB, and how was I exposed. I wasn't around any sick people and hadn't been traveling. The nurse explained that I had latent TB, I had the virus in my body but my body was winning the fight so far. I was still curious so I did what little research I could at my local library. I'm not sure where I first saw mention of raw milk, but I suddenly knew I was onto something. Just recently I had spent several months stuck out on a farm, away from anyone who could have been sick, drinking raw milk. The county nurse said I was most likely right.
Things went fine for a few months, other than the hassle of seeing the nurse every few weeks for more drugs and to check in. Obla De Obla Da life goes on... Until I caught a slight cold, with an occasional cough. The public health nurse blew a freaking gasket that I didn't call her immediately and ordered me to wear a mask in public. ( I never did find out what the punishment was for failure to comply.) She made an appointment for me within days to have a very unpleasant procedure called a bronchoalveolar lavage. (The link doesn't mention that they have you at an angle, with your head lower than the rest of our body during it all, too.) The technician was mistaken when she said I wouldn't be conscious enough to know what was happening, I felt like I was drowning the whole time. It was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life.
The bronchoscopy results were clear, my cough went a way and I was able to stop wearing the masks everywhere I went. All together, from the positive test to my last visit with the public health nurse I lost almost a year of my life. I barely went anywhere and I was afraid to be around any people, just in case I was contagious. I had been taking pills, vitamins, having blood tests, avoiding cheese and chocolate, having my lungs poked and dealing with masks for all of that time. All of that (and I wasn't even truly sick) caused by drinking raw milk. I don't even want to think of what kind of hell my life would have been if I had developed TB Disease.
I am begging you. DO NOT RISK YOUR CHILD'S LIFE by listening to some former banker turned food blogger!! I dodged a bullet, as an adult with a fully developed immune system. Children, especially babies, rely on us to do what is best for them. If you can't, or prefer not to, breastfeed for whatever reason - do not feed your child anything that your pediatrician is not fully in favor of and is accepted by the American Medical Association (or the equivalent where you are from). Raw milk is illegal for a reason. And TB is only one of several ways it can make you sick.

What's in your Cola???
With all this woo-ha about the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte I got curious about other popular drinks and started investigating. I am SHOCKED at what I found in my Coca-Cola!! I had no idea! Until Coke steps up and fixes some of these issues I am not going to buy any more of their products, that's for sure. If you agree, you should boycott them too! Check out what I found.
This is truly disturbing:

The Holistic Cancer Cure a Con?
I'm not a scientist, and I don't play one on TV. I barely paid attention back in high school science class; the subject has always intimidated me. I didn't dis-believe in science or anything, I just didn't don't understand much of it at all. Maybe that's why I was such an easy target for the snake oil salesmen in the pseudoscience world, or as I call it now "The World of Woo", when I first ventured into the social media world. I was easily misled by all of the different "truths" there suddenly were out there.
Luckily one day, as I was eating my organic apple and planning a March Against Monsanto, I saw this video by Dusty Smith and it changed my life for the better. First it made me mad, he dared to assume I got all my information from memes. But I had. Then it made me stop and think about things critically. Suddenly I was questioning all of the things that had drawn me in- anti-gmo propaganda, anti-vaccine propaganda, big pharma hiding cures, natural cures/treatments were inherently better and more. (I never bought the chem-trail business though. I guess there was a limit to how far my tinfoil would stretch.)
Today I see the organics industry as a wildly profitable racket. What better way to beat out the competitor than to convince the world that the competition is trying to poison everyone? Absolutely brilliant. They sure had me fooled for a while. These days I try to be more critical and I am trying to learn but something pissed me off today. I felt the need to vent about it.
My Service Dog was recently diagnosed with cancer and she needs an expensive surgery. I can't afford to pay for it myself so I started a fundraiser and have been applying to about a dozen charities that help pay for things like this. (We have gotten one pledge of $500 so far!) A couple have replied that they have no funding at this time, which sucks but is just the way the economy is right now. One place, the most highly recommended one, Red Rover Relief sadly was one of those places.
Their lack of funds was sad but not surprising. What was surprising to me though, was what was in the rest of the email. Along with the standard list of other agencies that might be able to help us they suggested I find a different vet! Apparently they think the surgical estimate is too high (I live in San Francisco and this is a very difficult surgery) but this was my second opinion. The first vet said surgery wasn't an option. The surprising part was they also included links to holistic products they recommend I consider discussing with my vet.
I checked the pages out of curiosity and what I saw angered me. These unregulated companies sell "herbal remedies" that are untested and no one knows if they even really work. Some might have testimonials but I am learning that isn't the kind of evidence that holds any weight in the scientific community. One company sells a combo of powders and potions as a potential cure with ingredients like Venus Fly Trap, green algae and fish oil. This miracle sells for a mere $155 for the "large" containers or $125 for the "small"! Another company offers milk thistle and yucca as "cancer support" for the bargain basement price of $20-60 per bottle.

This was just a couple of products within the pet-care world. The
human holistic cancer market must just be saturated with this kind of stuff! I
can't believe so many people have started companies and make their fortunes taking advantage of people's desperation and vulnerability when they are going
through the horror of a life threatening diagnosis. They are like vultures
circling, looking to pick the pockets of the distraught. It makes me angry and
it makes me sick.
I can't believe such a well-known animal
care charity was even hinting that I should spend a ton of money month after
month on this woo rather than getting my pup a surgical procedure that has
every chance of completely curing her in just a few hours. That just stuns me. I don't hold them in the same regard as the companies selling snake oil though. I have to take into account that they were most likely truly trying to be helpful since they couldn't offer financial assistance. The person writing the email is probably like me when I believed all this crap.

I can't say that some supplements aren't helpful in some small way, but no one can prove that they are either. I can't believe that venus fly trap cures cancer though and we aren't hearing about it. We sure hear about people who believe cannabis cured their cancer and there is a legitimate reason why big pharma is just now researching its possible healing abilities. Testing on cannabis hasn't been legally possible, so we only have anecdotal evidence. Venus fly trap isn't prohibited from research as far as I know, nor is any other supplement ingredient.
As for cannabis, I am a medical user of it for chronic pain. I was convinced it was a miracle during my time in the world of woo. I have since developed a healthy skepticism as to its cancer curing abilities though. I realize that there need to be controlled studies done so we can know if it can kill some cancers. All of those who claim it cured them might have done something else that was the actual cure that we don't know about. We don't know what drugs or treatments they did with the cannabis. It needs to be researched freely to find out what it can and what it can't do.
